Peace-Keeping

How can Artificial Intelligence make civil society safer? We are not referring only to war contexts, but also to peaceful situations, such as demonstrations and crowds in stadiums or squares of many cities.

A goal of Artificial Intelligence is to alert an operator of possible future risks. The rapid real-time monitoring of people and vehicles flow helps to prevent any threat, even in a large and complex environment. Thanks to accurate vision systems, AI can monitor areas with a high density of people and identify potential dangers and suspicious behaviours. Computer performs exactly as well as a surveillance agent would do, but much more efficiently. In fact, it manages to have control over large areas, continuously and without getting tired.

Certainly, this system helps operators in their tasks, since AI not only identifies people and vehicles to be monitored but also explains the reason why certain scenarios have been classified as dangerous. However, it leaves to safety managers the final decision on the actions to be taken. Like any technology, Artificial Intelligence also has some risks in relation, for example, to issues of non-discrimination, responsibility and control: issues that all the stakeholders involved must take into due consideration.
